Besakih Temple, Bali
Besakih Temple is the biggest temple in Bali and revered by both Hindus not only in Bali but throughout Indonesia. Besakih Temple is located in the village of Rendang regency Karangasem approximately 90 miles and 2 hours drive from downtown Denpasar.
Besakih Temple is the temple where resides the supreme god word "Besakih" itself comes from the word "Basuki" which means 'Salvation' and a long long time in the spelling became Basukir and Basukih, and end it became Besakih.
The name of Besakih located on two inscriptions are kept in Gedong Penyimpenan in Natar Court, one in the in Merajan Selonding and another one at the Sakti Gaduh temple in the village of Selat. History of Besakih Temple are related with the travelof Sri Markandeya (a Brahmin Shiva) from Raung eastern Java, Basuki area, East Java. His entourage was forced to go back to Java because many of them died of disease. After receiving instructions in Raung, he returned to Bali and held a planting Panca Datu (5 types of metals are gold, silver, iron, copper and diamonds) on the slopes of Mount Agung which became known as the Pura Basukia.
